Wheel House vs Skid House vs Hybrid

Short answer: A wheelhouse is a trailer you tow onto the ice and drop down; a skid house sits on runners and is pulled across the ice; a hybrid like CORE ICE's Hybrid Wheel/Skid Series can do both. Wheelhouses need a capable truck and thick ice (20 in+ clear ice for a truck plus wheelhouse, per the Minnesota DNR).

Once you're done setting up a hub every trip, the next step is a hard-sided house. They come in three basic forms, and the right one depends on how you get on the lake and how far you go.

Wheel houses

A wheelhouse is a trailer. You tow it on the road and onto the ice, and most drop the floor down onto the ice once you're parked (Ice Castle calls itself an original drop-down wheelhouse). They're the most like a camper, and many are sold as all-season RVs. You need a truck rated to pull it and enough ice for a truck plus a parked house. The Minnesota DNR's guideline for a heavy-duty truck with a wheelhouse is 20 inches or more of clear ice (see the ice safety guide).

Skid houses

A skid house sits on runners and gets pulled onto the ice, usually behind a truck, side-by-side or snowmobile depending on size. They're lighter than most wheelhouses. Polar Fox's 2026 skid models, for example, list from 1,080 lb (6.5' x 8') to 1,885 lb (8' x 14'), per its model sheet. You usually need a trailer to get one to the lake.

Hybrids (wheel + skid)

Some houses can run on either. CORE ICE sells a Hybrid Wheel/Skid Series. The idea is to tow on the road and then switch to skids for travel on the ice. I only tag a model "Wheel + Skid" on this site when the manufacturer lists it that way.
