Tip-Ups for Northwoods Pike and Walleye
Short answer: Both HT tip-ups are round thermal models with freeze-proof trips. The Polar Therm Extreme adds adjustable light/medium/heavy trip tension, a built-in tackle box and a lightstick holder. Set trip tension light for walleye and heavy for wind or big pike.
Tip-ups are how U.P. anglers fish more water than one rod allows. Thermal (round, hole-covering) tip-ups have largely replaced wooden cross-style ones in cold country. The insulated cover slows the hole from freezing and blocks light and snow.

Setting trip tension
Set it light for walleye and panfish, which drop a bait that feels wrong. Set it heavy for wind, deep lake trout and big pike with a large sucker, so the flag doesn't trip falsely.
Rigging basics
- Dacron or braided tip-up line on the spool, then a fluorocarbon leader for walleye or a wire/heavy fluoro leader for pike.
- Quick-strike rigs for pike on large dead or live bait. Treble-hook sucker rigs need a quick hookset.
