Panfish Plastics: What Works Under the Ice

Short answer: Match the plastic to the mood: micro tails for neutral crappies, spike imitations for bluegills, split tails for active perch, minnow bodies for crappies and jumbo perch. Natural colors usually win in clear water at midday; glow and bright colors at dawn, dusk and in stained water.

Plastics have replaced live bait for a lot of panfish anglers. They stay on the hook, they don't freeze in the bucket, and the right one moves with almost no rod input.

Colors

Carry three families: natural (olive, brown, smelt), bright (chartreuse, pink, orange) and glow. In clear U.P. lakes, natural colors usually win at midday. Glow and bright colors earn their keep at dawn, at dusk and in stained water. Charge glow plastics with a small UV light.

Storage

Keep different materials in separate trays. Durable elastomer plastics (Z-Man ElaZtech, for example) can react with standard PVC plastics, according to the manufacturer.

Brands you'll find in Upper Midwest shops include Maki, Bait Rigs, Clam, Lindy, Berkley, Z-Man and our featured brand Macula Tackle (owner-affiliated).
