Gas vs Electric vs Drill-Driven Augers
Short answer: A dedicated electric auger is the best all-around choice for most ice anglers. Gas still wins on very thick ice with lots of holes far from an outlet. A drill-driven bit like the K-Drill is cheapest if you already own a brushless 1/2-inch drill with at least 725 in-lb of torque.

Three ways to make a hole: a gas powerhead, a dedicated battery auger, or a bit driven by the cordless drill you already own. Each has a place.

K-Drill drill requirements (from the K-Drill manual)
- 1/2" chuck
- Side stabilizer arm, for a two-handed grip
- 18 V / 4 Ah lithium battery or higher
- Brushless motor
- 500–750 RPM, with a minimum of 725 in-lb of torque
- Drill mode (not hammer), lowest gear
K-Drill maintains a list of approved drills on its site. Underpowered drills bind up and can twist hard at breakthrough. Always hold on with both hands.
How to choose
- Gas: thick late-season ice, lots of holes, and long trips away from any outlet. It's louder, you mix fuel, and starting it at -20°F takes some coaxing.
- Dedicated electric: the best all-around choice for most anglers. It's quiet, starts at any temperature, and some models have reverse to flush slush.
- Drill-driven: the cheapest and lightest if you already own a high-torque brushless drill. Good for hole-hoppers on moderate ice. It's harder on wrists and drills, which is why plate-style conversion kits exist.
